Points to practice

1 Preparation

• Make sure all items are accessible throughout the procedure
• Prepare insertion site according to your facility policy
• Prior to venipuncture, hold catheter hub and rotate safety barrel 360 degrees
• Make sure catheter is seated back in the notch

2 Venipuncture

• Approach vein slowly at a low angle
• Observe immediate flashback along the catheter in 20 – 24 G catheters and behind the flash chamber in all gauge sizes
• Decrease angle of insertion and slightly advance the catheter/needle as a unit to ensure the catheter tip is within the vessel

3 Catheter advancement

• Push the catheter off the needle, into the vessel, while maintaining skin traction
• Avoid pulling back on the needle while advancing the catheter
