Points to practice
1 Preparation
- Make sure all items are accessible throughout the procedure
- Prepare insertion site according to your facility policy
- Prior to venipuncture, hold catheter hub and rotate safety barrel 360 degrees
- Make sure catheter is seated back in the notch
2 Venipuncture
- Approach vein slowly at a low angle
- Observe immediate flashback along the catheter in 20 – 24 G catheters and behind the flash chamber in all gauge sizes
- Decrease angle of insertion and slightly advance the catheter/needle as a unit to ensure the catheter tip is within the vessel
3 Catheter advancement
- Push the catheter off the needle, into the vessel, while maintaining skin traction
- Avoid pulling back on the needle while advancing the catheter
